Which version of OneDrive sync client am I using?
If you sync OneDrive for Business files to your computer then you can work with them directly in File Explorer, and access the files even when you're offline. Whenever you're online, any changes that you or others made while offline will sync automatically.
OneDrive for Business uses a sync client to achieve synchronisation with your computer. There are two different sync clients in use; the "new" or "next generation" OneDrive for Business Sync Client, and the "previous" OneDrive for Business Sync Client.
The table below shows which OneDrive for Business sync client you require.
To sync these files |
Use this sync client |
OneDrive for Business accounts associated with Office 365. |
OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client |
SharePoint site libraries or on-premises instances of OneDrive for Business (instances that aren't associated with Office 365) |
The previous OneDrive for Business Sync Client |
If you're an Office 365 subscriber, but also want to sync across SharePoint site libraries, you can run both sync clients at the same time.
Which sync client am I using?
There are two easy ways to find out which sync client you are using:
These methods are described below.
Checking the taskbar
To find out which sync client you are using, from the taskbar, proceed as follows.
- On the taskbar at the bottom of your computer screen, hover over the OneDrive cloud icon.
Note:
On the taskbar, you might need to select the Show hidden icons arrow ( or ) next to the notification area to see the OneDrive cloud icon.
The cloud icon colour, and associated hover text, indicate which sync client you are using. For example, a blue cloud icon, with hover text OneDrive – Cloud Direct, shows you're using the OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client.
The table below lists the different options.

Another way to see which version of the OneDrive sync client you have is to check the name in File Explorer. Proceed as follows.
- Go to Start, and type "OneDrive" in the search box.
- From the search results, right-click either OneDrive or OneDrive for Business. (You may have only one option).
- From the menu options, select Open file location.
A File Explorer window opens, listing OneDrive for Business and/or OneDrive application shortcuts.
- Right-click the OneDrive for Business (or OneDrive) application and, from the menu, click Properties.
The Properties dialogue box appears.
