But if&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;unclear whether it adds real value to your data analytics,&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;not alone.&nbsp;There\u2019s&nbsp;some&nbsp;confusion around the relationship between Power BI and Microsoft Fabric.&nbsp;Here, we&nbsp;address&nbsp;common misconceptions, explain how Fabric provides a unified data platform and&nbsp;provide&nbsp;the opportunity to evaluate it at a consultant-led workshop.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-power-bi-fabric-nbsp-confusions\"><strong>Power BI\u2013Fabric&nbsp;confusions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft&nbsp;Fabric&nbsp;is&nbsp;described&nbsp;as a \u2018unified analytics platform\u2019&nbsp;covering&nbsp;data engineering,&nbsp;data pipelines,&nbsp;data warehousing,&nbsp;data science,&nbsp;real-time analytics,&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;Power BI.&nbsp;While it is&nbsp;all&nbsp;those things, and more,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;this&nbsp;positioning&nbsp;that&nbsp;may be&nbsp;the cause of three common misconceptions:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fabric is&nbsp;the&nbsp;\u2018new Power BI\u2019&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fabric is replacing Power BI&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You need Fabric to use Power BI.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Misconception 1:&nbsp;Fabric is the \u2018new Power BI\u2019<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft Fabric&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;the new&nbsp;Power BI, but it does incorporate it into an&nbsp;end-to-end data platform. Power BI&nbsp;remains&nbsp;the&nbsp;place&nbsp;where users consume&nbsp;insights, while Fabric handles everything that happens before that data reaches a dashboard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Misconception 2:&nbsp;Fabric is replacing Power BI<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PowerBI&nbsp;will remain&nbsp;to be the&nbsp;integral&nbsp;analytics and visualisation interface within the Microsoft portfolio. Alongside this&nbsp;Fabric will expand the backend data capabilities&nbsp;and provide greater integration, meaning&nbsp;PowerBI&nbsp;users&nbsp;will still utilise the same day-to-day interface.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Misconception 3:&nbsp;You need Fabric to use Power BI<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;using Power BI with&nbsp;Pro (ie&nbsp;standard)&nbsp;or&nbsp;Premium Per User&nbsp;licences,&nbsp;you&nbsp;can still use&nbsp;Power BI standalone. You&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;need Fabric to&nbsp;build reports,&nbsp;share dashboards,&nbsp;and&nbsp;run most BI workloads.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;only at the&nbsp;capacity-based Power BI Premium&nbsp;licensing level that&nbsp;things start to overlap with&nbsp;Fabric.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like many other organisations, you may&nbsp;be&nbsp;using&nbsp;Power BI&nbsp;for&nbsp;reporting,&nbsp;Azure Data Factory&nbsp;for&nbsp;pipelines, and&nbsp;Synapse&nbsp;as your&nbsp;data platform.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fabric now brings all these capabilities&nbsp;together, so&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;also a&nbsp;misconception that this \u2018new&nbsp;thing replaces old thing\u2019.&nbsp;In fact,&nbsp;all this functionality lives&nbsp;on&nbsp;within Fabric, and&nbsp;is augmented.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Microsoft&nbsp;Fabric =&nbsp;a complete&nbsp;end-to-end&nbsp;data platform,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Power BI = the&nbsp;analytics,&nbsp;visualisation, and&nbsp;reporting within it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-licensing-is-nbsp-fabric-nbsp-essentially-nbsp-an-nbsp-upsell-nbsp\"><strong>Licensing: is&nbsp;Fabric&nbsp;essentially&nbsp;an&nbsp;upsell?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The short answer is no.&nbsp;While Microsoft Fabric does require separate&nbsp;licensing,&nbsp;for IT leaders&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;much more&nbsp;nuanced than&nbsp;\u2018another platform, another bill\u2019.&nbsp;On the face of it,&nbsp;Fabric looks&nbsp;like&nbsp;an&nbsp;additional&nbsp;platform:&nbsp;new name (Fabric), new portal, and new capabilities. So, it seems like a&nbsp;net-new purchase decision.&nbsp;With the added unpredictability of&nbsp;capacity pricing.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it also&nbsp;represents&nbsp;an opportunity to&nbsp;consolidate&nbsp;and&nbsp;rationalise:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>replacing&nbsp;multiple Azure services&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>unifying&nbsp;data architecture&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reducing&nbsp;integration overhead, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>simplifying&nbsp;governance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#6abfd952\"><strong>Licensing in a nutshell:<\/strong> Power BI is typically licensed on a per user basis through Power BI Pro or Power BI Premium User (PPU) subscriptions. Although some organisations are utilising capacity-based Power BI Premium licensing. Fabric licensing is based on capacity units (of compute + storage + workloads) which power data engineering, and all other functions in Fabric including Power BI workloads. This is a key point &#8211; Power BI can run on Fabric capacity.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also reflects&nbsp;the&nbsp;broader shift from the old world of separate&nbsp;tools (here&nbsp;Power BI, Synapse and&nbsp;Azure Data Factory)&nbsp;to the new&nbsp;world.&nbsp;Fabric provides a&nbsp;single, unified data platform&nbsp;that provides:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>one storage layer (OneLake)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>one compute model&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>one governance layer&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>one billing model.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-nbsp-power-bi-but-nbsp-not-yet-fabric-what-value-does-nbsp-it-nbsp-add-nbsp\"><strong>Using&nbsp;Power BI, but&nbsp;not yet Fabric? What value does&nbsp;it&nbsp;add?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your organisation&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;using Fabric, you may be asking:<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What problem does it&nbsp;solve&nbsp;for us?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do we need this now, or can we wait?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In answering these questions, there&nbsp;are&nbsp;two&nbsp;things to&nbsp;consider. First, ask yourself \u2018Do we just need reporting, or do we need a full data platform?\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use&nbsp;Power BI alone:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When&nbsp;you need dashboards and reporting&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If data sources are already prepared, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;need complex data engineering.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adopt&nbsp;Fabric&nbsp;if you need:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An&nbsp;end-to-end data pipeline&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Want a unified data platform&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To&nbsp;modernise&nbsp;your data estate, and\/or&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To prepare&nbsp;for AI&nbsp;and&nbsp;advanced analytics.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which brings us to&nbsp;your second consideration:&nbsp;your AI strategy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fabric helps organisations create a governed, reusable data foundation&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;essential for effective AI. Instead of manually transferring or duplicating data into Power BI, Fabric can mirror data from external sources directly into&nbsp;OneLake.
