Changing the LiveVault encryption key password
The encryption key is an element of the LiveVault security that protects your data. The system creates an encryption key and gives you a password to that key when you add a new LiveVault computer agent for the first time. This encryption key, known only to you, fully encrypts your data before it leaves your server, and it remains encrypted when not on your server, even at the off-site vaulting center. The combination of fully encrypted data and a secure, authenticated transmission implemented using Secure Socket Layer and digital certificate technology ensures end-to-end data protection.
Setting up your initial encryption key password is described as part of knowledge articles, Creating a new computer (server) account, or, Adding and provisioning a CIFS collector agent.
This article describes how to change your encryption key password.
Changing the encryption key password
The encryption key password may be changed using the Configuration Wizard utility. To change the encryption key password, proceed as follows,
- On the LiveVault Agent computer, open the Configuration Wizard by selecting it from the Start Menu:
Start >> All Programs >> LiveVault Backup >> LiveVault Configuration Wizard.
The Configuration Wizard opens.
- In the Username box, type the LiveVault user name.
- In the Password box, type the password for the LiveVault user account.
- Click Next.
The Data protection page opens.
- Select the Change data encryption key password option.
- Click Next.
The New password required page opens.
- Enter and confirm a new encryption key password for this LiveVault Agent computer.
Important: It is critical that you remember this password.
- Ensure the Send Encrypted Password checkbox is ticked.
The Send Encrypted Password checkbox is ticked as a default. When ticked, a copy of the password is stored with the LiveVault service. You can then retrieve the password at a later time if you forget your password. Cloud Direct strongly recommend you leave this checkbox ticked.
- Click Next.
The Configuration complete window appears.
- Click Finish.
The Configuration Wizard saves the settings and completes the configuration. The encryption key password has now been changed.
